However, the apartment's demise was not caused by faulty building techniques. Often, Japanese buildings are made with an “expansion joint” which divides the earthquake's vibration. This allows the tall and heavy buildings to have some flexibility in their response to earthquakes. The restoration of the passage connecting two building will be required this time. As you see in the picture, half of the building hardly had damages. Japan has thousands of years of earthquake experience and its architectural technology is world-class. This apartment's demise was a unique incident for Japan, earthquake nation.

4月14日、震度7の地震が日本の熊本を襲いました。

死者も出てしまい、まだ余震が続いているので心配です。

そんな中、衝撃的な画像が話題になっています。それは、マンションが真っ二つに割れている写真です。これを見た人から、「建築ミスではないか？」という声も多くあります。少し前に台湾で、地震でマンションが倒壊した事故を思い出す人も多いはずです。

しかし、これは建築ミスではありません。建物が弱いからヒビが入ったのではないのです。これは、「エキスパンションジョイント」という構造で、建物が大きかったり、重い場合、建物を敢えて複数に分割し、揺れに強くする手法なんです。

今回割れた廊下の部分は修復が必要になります。でも、写真を見ると分かるように、他の部分にはほとんどダメージがありません。

地震を多く経験している日本、そして建築技術の高い日本だからこそ、起こった現象なんですね。
